Detroit is 12-3 against the spread following a loss since 2023. That is an 80% cover rate, the best in the NFL, and the Lions lost last week. They are laying 6.5 to the Jets on Sunday, and it is our strongest play of the week.

Our Three Best Bets for Week 3
Best bet: Lions -6.5 vs Jets
The most specific edge available on this board, and it is backed by a number rather than a feeling.
Detroit has gone 12-3 against the spread after a loss since 2023. An 80% cover rate following a defeat is the best mark in the league, and it describes a team that responds rather than spirals. The Lions are coming off a Week 2 loss.
They host a Jets side priced at +255 on the moneyline, with the total at 47.5. Laying 6.5 rather than 7 also matters, because it keeps the number off a key margin. A seven-point Detroit win covers here where it would push at -7.
The lean: Detroit -6.5.
Best bet: Under 42.5, Steelers at Bengals
One of the two lowest totals on the board, and we think it can go lower still.
This is a divisional matchup, and divisional games are consistently tighter and lower scoring than the same teams against outside opposition. Familiarity cuts both ways, but it tends to favour defences that have seen the personnel before.
The market has already moved here. Cincinnati scored 33 in Week 1, and yet this game is priced among the cheapest on the slate. When a total drops on teams that have been scoring, the books have usually seen something in the matchup.
The lean: under 42.5.
Best bet: Cardinals +8.5 at 49ers
Our contrarian play, and it follows a two-week pattern that has now cost a lot of people money.
In Week 1 Arizona beat the Chargers 26-14 outright as an 11.5-point underdog. In Week 2 Cleveland beat Tampa Bay 23-19 outright at +8. The biggest number on the board has failed twice in a row.
San Francisco has looked like arguably the best team in the league through two weeks, and we are not arguing they lose. We are arguing that 8.5 is a lot to lay in a season where large spreads keep failing, against a Cardinals side that has already produced one of them.
The lean: Arizona +8.5.
Two We Are Avoiding
Chargers at Bills, BUF -7
This one deserves an honest explanation, because our two main arguments this week point in opposite directions.
The underdog pattern says take the Chargers at +7, especially with 7 being a key number where a push is live. But the travel situation says the opposite. Los Angeles is a West Coast team playing a 1 p.m. ET kickoff, which is a 10 a.m. body-clock start, and that is one of the more reliable situational disadvantages in the sport.
Add the highest total of the week at 50.5 and a Buffalo moneyline of -360, and there is no clean read. When two strong arguments cancel, the answer is no bet.
Eagles at Bears, PHI -4.5
Chicago’s quarterback situation is the whole game. Caleb Williams was carted off in Week 2 and Tyson Bagent is in line to start.
The line already reflects that, which is precisely the problem. Philadelphia at -218 on the moneyline is priced for exactly the scenario everyone can see. There is no edge in betting information the market has already absorbed. Revisit if Williams is upgraded.
Week 3 Parlay: Three Legs
All three drawn from the analysis above rather than reached for.
| Leg | Pick | Reasoning |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Lions -6.5 | 12-3 ATS after a loss since 2023, best cover rate in the NFL you can find on bet365 |
| 2 | Under 42.5 (PIT at CIN) | Divisional, already one of the lowest totals on the board |
| 3 | Jaguars -3 | Home favourite on a key number against a Patriots side at +135 |
A word on parlays. They pay more because they are harder to win, not because they offer better value. Three legs near even money returns roughly 6 to 1, and the true probability of all three landing sits below what that price implies once the juice compounds. Treat it as an entertainment stake rather than the core of your week.
Note also that leg three sits exactly on a key number. A three-point Jacksonville win pushes rather than wins, which kills the whole ticket. If you can find -2.5 anywhere, take it.
The Rest of the Sunday Board
| Matchup | Line | Quick read |
|---|---|---|
| Browns at Panthers | CAR -2.5 | Market has corrected hard on Cleveland after the upset |
| Steelers at Bengals | CIN -3.5, 42.5 | Under is the play, not the side |
| Chargers at Bills | BUF -7, 50.5 | Pass. Arguments cancel |
| Patriots at Jaguars | JAX -3 | Parlay leg. Watch the key number |
| Jets at Lions | DET -6.5 | Best bet of the week |
| Cardinals at 49ers | SF -8.5 | Take the points |
| Seahawks at Commanders | SEA -7 | Daniels out, but Seattle travels east for 1pm. Lean home dog |
| Rams at Broncos (SNF) | LAR -2.5 | Los Angeles still without Myles Garrett |
| Eagles at Bears (MNF) | PHI -4.5 | Pass. QB news already priced in |
| Others | [LIVE] | Confirm before leaning |

What Two Weeks of Results Have Taught Us
- Fade the biggest number. Arizona at +11.5 and Cleveland at +8 both won outright. San Francisco laying 8.5 is this week’s version of the same question.
- Trends beat narratives. Detroit at 12-3 ATS after a loss is a checkable number. “Bounce-back spot” without a figure attached is not.
- Travel is underpriced. Two West Coast teams with 1 p.m. ET kickoffs is a scheduling detail no injury report captures.
- Watch the handle split. The Packers line moved four points toward Atlanta while most tickets stayed on Green Bay, which usually signals sharper money on the move.
- Passing is a position. Two games on this board have no clean read. Not betting them is the correct call.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the best bet for NFL Week 3?
Lions -6.5 against the Jets. Detroit is 12-3 against the spread following a loss since 2023, an 80% cover rate that leads the NFL, and the Lions are coming off a Week 2 defeat.
What is the best underdog play in Week 3?
Arizona at +8.5 in San Francisco. The biggest favourite on the board has lost outright in each of the first two weeks, and the Cardinals produced one of those upsets themselves.
Which Week 3 games should you avoid?
Chargers at Bills, where the underdog pattern and the travel disadvantage cancel each other out, and Eagles at Bears, where Chicago’s quarterback situation is already fully priced into the line.
Why is the Bengals total so low?
At 42.5 it is one of the two lowest on the board despite Cincinnati scoring freely earlier in the season. Divisional matchups tend to run lower, and a total dropping on teams that have been scoring usually means the books see something in the defensive matchup.
Should you bet a Week 3 parlay?
Only as an entertainment stake. Parlays pay more because they are harder to win, and compounding juice means the price rarely reflects true probability. Note that a leg sitting on a key number, like Jaguars -3, can push and void the ticket.
Are picks more reliable now than in Week 1?
Yes. Week 1 was projection with no competitive tape. With two weeks of results there are real trends to work from, though the volume of upsets this season is a reminder that early-season form is still noisy.
