The Biggest Numbers, and Why They Come With a Warning
49ers -8.5 vs Cardinals and Bills -7 vs Chargers are the largest spreads on the Sunday board.
Both are defensible on merit. San Francisco has looked like arguably the best team in the league through two weeks. Buffalo is at home with the highest total of the week at 50.5.
But look at what has happened to big favourites this season:
- Week 1: Arizona beat the Chargers 26-14 outright as 11.5-point underdogs. The only double-digit favourite on that board lost.
- Week 2: Cleveland beat Tampa Bay 23-19 outright as an 8-point underdog, wrecking survivor pools across the country.
Two consecutive weeks where the biggest number failed outright. That does not make either favourite this week a bad bet, but it is the context the board is being read in.
The Line That Moved Four Points

The move was injury-driven. Green Bay was already missing starters, then lost another receiver and possibly two offensive linemen on a short turnaround. Atlanta, meanwhile, hoped to get Michael Penix Jr. back under centre.
The detail worth keeping is what the money did. Despite the line moving four points toward Atlanta, the majority of handle stayed on Green Bay. When a line moves against where most tickets are sitting, it usually means fewer, larger bets are pushing it. That split is more informative than the move itself.
Two Travel Spots the Board May Be Underpricing
Week 3 has an unusual scheduling quirk. Two West Coast teams have 1 p.m. ET kickoffs on the East Coast.

The Bengals and Steelers number is the one that stands out. A divisional matchup between two teams that both scored freely in Week 1 now sits among the lowest totals of the week, which suggests the market has seen something in the defensive matchups.
