Four starting quarterback situations are moving NFL Week 4 lines, and two of them have already flipped a favourite for this week sports betting odds. Green Bay went from a 1.5-point underdog to a 3.5 to 4-point favourite at Tampa Bay, and Arizona went from underdog to favourite at the Giants.
Miami has also lost De’Von Achane for the season, according to reports. Here is the latest Week 4 news, organised by what it does to the betting lines, with Friday’s final designations still to come.
Updated Thursday 1 October. Injury designations change daily, so treat every status here as a snapshot and confirm the final inactives roughly 90 minutes before each kickoff.
The Four Quarterback Situations
1. Giants: Jaxson Dart out, Brian Burns lost
New York has lost quarterback Jaxson Dart to a knee injury, and an NFL Network report said an MRI showed more damage than first believed and that he could miss the rest of the season. The Giants have not confirmed the extent. Pass rusher Brian Burns is also out, according to reports.
Line impact: New York opened as a 2.5-point home favourite against Arizona on 27 September. The Cardinals are now favoured by about 1.5. The Giants also scored no touchdowns against Tennessee last week.
2. Buccaneers: Baker Mayfield’s thumb
Mayfield is dealing with a thumb injury, and Tampa Bay is preparing rookie Jalon Daniels for what would be his first NFL start, according to reports. Daniels’ debut reportedly consisted of an interception and no completions.
Line impact: Tampa Bay opened as a 1.5-point favourite against Green Bay. The Packers are now 3.5 to 4-point favourites on the road, a swing of about five points. Green Bay also has extra rest after playing on Thursday last week. Mayfield’s Friday designation is the single most important update for this game.
3. Bears: Case Keenum under centre
Caleb Williams is week-to-week with a hamstring injury, and backup Tyson Bagent was placed in the concussion protocol. That left Case Keenum, who started and led Chicago to a 27-7 win over Philadelphia on Monday night.
Line impact: Chicago is a 3.5-point home favourite against the Jets with a total of 42.5. The Keenum bump is already priced in.
4. Commanders: Jayden Daniels and London
Washington beat Seattle 33-31 as an 8.5-point underdog last week. Jayden Daniels is expected to travel to London and work toward a return, according to reports. His final status is unresolved.
Line impact: Indianapolis is a 3.5-point favourite with a total of 47. Because kickoff is 9:30 a.m. ET on Sunday, the inactive list arrives around 8:00 a.m. ET, the earliest of the week.
Other Injury News That Matters
Dolphins at Vikings
- Miami: De’Von Achane is out for the season, according to reports. He was ruled out of a game last week with a knee injury.
- Minnesota: Justin Jefferson is nursing an ankle injury. Minnesota is a 10.5-point favourite with a total of 38.5, the joint-lowest of the week.
Rams at Eagles
- Los Angeles: Myles Garrett remains on injured reserve after knee surgery. His minimum four-game absence covers the Giants, Broncos, Eagles and Bills, so this is the third of the four.
- Philadelphia: the Eagles are coming off a 27-7 loss in Chicago.
Jets at Bears
- New York: Breece Hall is dealing with a quad injury, which compromises the running game.
Cowboys at Texans
- Houston: Nico Collins and offensive lineman Ed Ingram may return, according to reports. Houston scored only 23 points over the last two weeks.
Lions at Panthers (Sunday night)
- Carolina: beaten up at receiver, running back and in the secondary, according to reports. Bryce Young has faced one of the highest pressure rates in the league.
Chiefs at Raiders
- Kansas City: replacing key starters in the secondary.
- Las Vegas: Brock Bowers is back, and Kirk Cousins has nine touchdown passes through three games.
Jaguars at Bengals
- Cincinnati: secondary injuries are worth watching on the highest total of the week, 51.5.
Falcons at Saints (Monday night)
- Atlanta: Michael Penix Jr. is back under centre and the Falcons have extra rest. They blew out Green Bay in Week 3.
- New Orleans: dealing with injuries along the defensive line.
Steelers at Browns (Thursday night)
- Cleveland: injuries along the offensive line make it harder to sustain drives against Pittsburgh’s front. Kickoff is 8:15 p.m. ET on Prime Video, with Pittsburgh a 2.5-point favourite.
Two Travel Spots
- London: Colts vs Commanders at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, the first of three NFL games in London this season. Washington is the designated home team.
- Baltimore: the Ravens host Tennessee a week after the NFL’s first game in Rio de Janeiro. Baltimore is laying 11.5, the biggest number of the week.
What Week 3 Changed
- Another big favourite lost. Washington at +8.5 beat Seattle 33-31. In each of the first three weeks, a favourite laying 8 or more has lost outright.
- Philadelphia lost 27-7 in Chicago. It was a road favourite on Monday night, and it now hosts the Rams as a 3-point underdog.
- Atlanta blew out Green Bay. The Packers line had already fallen from -7 to about -4.5 during the week on injuries, and Atlanta covered easily.
When Updates Land, and Why Friday Matters
Wednesday practice reports tell you who is limited. Friday designations tell you who is actually playing. The gap between those two is where most late line movement happens.
- Friday: Mayfield’s thumb, Daniels’ travel status for London, and any Giants quarterback announcement.
- Sunday 8:00 a.m. ET: inactives for the London game, the earliest of the week.
- Sunday afternoon and night: inactives arrive roughly 90 minutes before each kickoff.
