The provincial government of Alberta is all set to implement the new gambling law, the iGaming Act, which will open up the market to private casino and sportsbook operators in Alberta. This move is set to transform the online gambling market a great deal.
All concerned parties will benefit in various ways, including the government, the private operators, and the players. So, what exactly does this new online gambling law actually mean for players?
1. More Choices beyond PlayAlberta.ca
Alberta currently has only one regulated, legal online gambling and sports betting platform: PlayAlberta.ca. While residents can still access offshore platforms, they lack the safety guarantees provided by regulation.
However, this will soon change, as over a dozen private operators are all set to launch here on July 13, 2026. As such, players will have many more choices beyond the government-run platform.
Notable brands that have already registered with the Alberta Gaming, Liquor and Cannabis Commission (AGLC) include the following:
- BetMGM
- DraftKings
- FanDuel
- Stardust Casino
- Caesars Sportsbook & Casino
- Jackpot City
What’s more, other big-brand operators like Bet365 have also confirmed plans to enter the market. Notably, every operator brings something fresh and unique, both for the sportsbook and the Alberta casinos landscape.
2. More, Bigger Bonuses
PlayAlberta.ca has an enticing matched-deposit welcome bonus of up to $1,000. However, it is somewhat light on ongoing promotions. Besides, players can only claim most of the offers once.
Opening the market to private operators means unleashing a flurry of bonuses. Notably, most operators offer competitive sports betting bonuses to woo new players. Moreover, most operators will likely offer more ongoing promotions than PlayAlberta.ca. And while bonus sizes offer, many operators try to outdo each other by offering bigger bonuses with better terms and conditions.
However, it is important to note that the new law directs that bonuses be offered on an opt-in basis, which is a major player protection feature inspired by Ontario’s policies. This means that you must tweak your settings to let the operator display offers on your account. Until then, you must navigate to your account’s promotions page to claim the available offers.
3. Expanded Casino Games & Sports Betting Offerings
PlayAlberta.ca is an all-in-one gambling platform, offering casino games as well as sports bets. There are about 600 casino games and 12 core sports categories, which is impressive. However, many private operators offer considerably larger selections, with thousands of casino games and hundreds of sports categories.
Moreover, many online casinos have exclusive games that you won’t find anywhere else. To this end, the launch of private operators will considerably boost the range of casino games and sports markets available to residents.
4. Stronger Player Protections
Players who prefer other platforms besides PlayAlberta.ca have no choice but to play at offshore, unregulated sites. While many of these sites are respectable, they cannot guarantee the same level of player protection that they would if they were locally regulated.
Local regulation will guarantee various player protections across all sites. Most notably, the authorities have already set up a centralized self-exclusion database where residents can voluntarily ban themselves across all regulated online platforms and land-based casinos without needing to contact individual operators.
All online platforms are also required to offer mandatory responsible gambling tools. Deposit limits are required to help players better manage their bankrolls. There will also be reality checks and activity statements, in addition to other tools. Notably, all operators must obtain an RG Check accreditation from the Responsible Gambling Council.
It is worth noting that the law requires 1% of the gross gaming revenue to go toward player safety initiatives. This means that residents already struggling with problem gambling will enjoy better support over time.
