Spread
Spread betting is a form of wagering that allows you to bet on the margin of victory for a contest. Sportsbooks set a value for the margin of victory and assign even odds on each side of the bet.
Using the Raiders vs. Broncos example above, the Raiders may be 3-point favorites and the Broncos 3-point underdogs. The odds for this spread—and most spreads—would likely be set at -110 on both sides, allowing the same profit potential on both sides.
If you bet the Raiders, you would need them to win by more than 3 points. If you bet the Broncos, you would need them to lose by less than 3 or win outright.
Total (Over/Under)
Sportsbooks offer totals bets, which allow people to wager on the number of points in a game. For example, in the Broncos vs. Raiders example, the total may be 43.5 combined points.
You can bet the Over or the Under based on this total. Betting the Over means betting on more than 43.5 points to be scored.
Player Props
Player prop bets are over/under bets on statistical metrics for individual players. In the NFL, an example of a player prop wager would be betting on a wide receiver to have over or under a certain amount of receptions in a game. In the NBA, an example of a player prop would be betting on a player to have over or under a certain amount of points. Each major sportsbook offers player props for professional sports. College player prop selections may be limited.
Futures
Futures bets are wagers on any market that takes more than a day to settle. Sportsbooks set odds for events like the Super Bowl or NBA Finals years and months in advance. As a result, bettors can get more attractive odds on teams they think will win at the end of the season.
Parlays
Parlays combine any of the bet types listed above to make one wager in which each bet is dependent on every other bet hitting. Each bet in a parlay is called a “leg,” and the more legs that someone adds to their parlay, the longer the odds become and the higher the potential payout becomes.

Nevada Sports Betting Laws
Nevada has a colorful history with sports betting legislation. It began in 1931 when gambling was officially legalized statewide. Before this point, sports betting in Las Vegas had taken place in illegal books or in a few semi-legal turf clubs.
In 1951, the federal government imposed a flat 10% tax rate on any legal sportsbooks in Nevada (currently operating in legal turf clubs). Twenty-three years later, in 1974, the federal government loosened its restrictions on sports betting in Las Vegas and lowered the tax from 10% to 2%. This resulted in a massive expansion of retail sportsbooks throughout the state.
This began a chain reaction that caused sports betting to become widely accepted throughout Las Vegas and beyond. When mobile sports betting became a possibility in the early 2000s, online gambling was never really halted or resisted. It just took time for mobile sportsbooks to develop.
In 2010, Nevada’s state government legalized online gambling with the caveat that sports bettors had to register at retail casinos partnered with individual apps. The apps launched a few years later in 2013.
Nevada residents have no reason to try offshore or illegal sports betting sites. Legal sportsbooks in Nevada are much safer, offering advanced digital security and regulation. Both of these measures prevent cybercriminals from accessing your personal information or winnings and give you an effective method to report a crime or grievance if you believe a sportsbook is inappropriately withholding your winnings.
You need to pay taxes on your winnings. Note that winnings are taxed according to the year in which you win them, not when you withdraw them. For example, if you win a sports wager for $1,000 in 2024, they’ll need to report this income on their 2024 tax returns, which will be filed in 2025.
Sportsbooks, meanwhile, must also report any winnings or profits to the Nevada Gaming Control Board and Nevada Gaming Commission, both of which are responsible for licensing and regulating gambling activities in the state.
NV Sports Betting Legalization Timeline

Nevada Sports Betting Revenue and Handle
Nevada’s Gaming Control Board reported a sports betting handle of $843 million for December 2023, down 8% from November ($921 million).
The 2023 YTD numbers for Nevada were astounding, too: $8.2 billion in handle and $481 million in sports betting revenue.
Starting 2024 out strong, the NGCB announced $185 million in bets were placed on the Chiefs vs. 49ers Super Bowl. This set a Nevada record after last year’s $179.8 million in Super Bowl bets in 2023.
Nevada has benefited from allowing online sports wagering. Indeed, the state government makes huge profits every month both from retail and online sports betting.
Nevada had a monopoly on sports wagering from 1992 to 2018, increasing its profits exponentially. While sports betting is now legalized in many other US states, Nevada’s state government still makes a hefty profit from sports betting revenue.
The tax rate on operator hold in the state of Nevada is 6.75%, while the tax rate on personal winnings is 24% at the federal level.
