49ers-Broncos Betting Line Shifts on SNF

San Francisco QB Jimmy Garoppolo got first-team reps all week for the first time this year in the aftermath of the season-ending injury to fellow QB Trey Lance vs. Seattle last week. Garoppolo, who led the 49ers to the NFC title game last season, has a record of 33-14.

And what if Garoppolo gets hurt? His backup is rookie Brock Purdy from Iowa State, the 262nd player picked in the 2022 NFL Draft.

Both teams already have had a common foe: In Week 1, Denver lost at Seattle, 17-16. In Week 2, San Francisco beat the visiting Seahawks, 27-7.

No team has struggled more on first-and-goal possessions than the Broncos, who are 0-for-5 scoring TDs in such scenarios — including their two fumbles inside Seattle’s 1 and settling for FGs at Houston’s 2 and 6 last week.

Also, Denver QB Russell Wilson, acquired in a blockbuster deal with Seattle in the offseason, has struggled in leading his team to only two TDs. He was particularly off last week when he was only 14-for-31 passing. That 45.2 completion percentage was his worst in the past seven years.

49ers vs. Broncos SNF Prediction

The game will be a battle between the 49ers’ top-ranked defense against the Broncos’ No. 3 unit.

With the QB situation pretty much a push, the 49ers warrant a big edge in the running game, even without injured star Elijah Mitchell (IR, knee). On Sunday against a defense that stymied Denver in Week 1, the 49ers had a league season-high 45 rushes for 189 yards in dominating possession (70 plays to 47).

Plus, this is a bad sign for the home team. The Broncos are the runaway leader in penalties enforced against them with 18 totaling 206 yards. By comparison, the 49ers were penalized only once last week.

Now, if only San Francisco TE George Kittle (questionable, groin) comes back after starting the week with limited practice.

Prediction: 49ers 24, Broncos 16
