Dodgers outfielder Alex Call has called on MLB and its broadcast partners to remove what he described as “soft porn” commercials from playoff broadcasts, with Novig’s Sydney Sweeney campaign among the ads drawing criticism.
Novig launched the ad with Sweeney to promote platform’s sports only prediction markets, with Sweeney wearing little to nothing throughout the campaign.
Call challenges Playoff commercials
Call’s criticism followed a post questioning whether commercials during baseball broadcasts were appropriate for children.
“My son wants to watch baseball with Dada, but how do I justify that when a half-naked woman could come on screen anytime?” Call wrote on X.
Call named TBS, Fox and NBC in his appeal and tagged MLB. He also wrote: “This is America’s Pastime. Parents shouldn’t have to worry about this.”
According to torontosun.com, several Dodgers teammates reposted Call’s message, while two-time MVP Dale Murphy backed his son’s criticism in a separate post tagging MLB.
Novig defends the campaign
The Novig campaign features Sweeney covering her body with sports equipment. Its advertising includes the line “Think you know sports? Prove it” and has also appeared on billboards in Times Square.
Novig CEO Jack Fortinsky defended the campaign, saying the company supports women’s sports and did not intend to portray female athletes. The outlet also reported that Sweeney had publicly said she filmed the ad because she believes in the company’s leadership and message.
