Barstool Sportsbook will debut in Colorado August 9, and in Virginia on August 10, according to an announcement today on social media by company president David Portnoy. This marks six states for the popular sportsbook, which has an eye on several more before the end of 2021.
Currently, Bartstool Sportsbook is also operational in Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, and Pennsylvania. It’s anticipated that the New York-based company will launch in other states before the start of the National Football League season this fall. There is speculation that they plan to open in New Jersey, Arizona, and Tennessee before week one of the professional football season if possible.
The recent acquisition of theScore by Penn National Gaming, which holds a controlling interest in Barstool, is expected to increase the company’s ability to infuse the market with content and gaming features. theScore is the leading sports app in Canada, and Penn has aspirations to pair its technology with Barstool’s content to establish the leading sportsbook and sports betting and news brand in North America.
Barstool’s website features sports blogs and podcasts, as well as popular culture content. In both Michigan and Pennsylvania, Barstool also offers online casino games via its app, which is available via both Google Play and the Apple App Store.
About Barstool Sports
Barstool was founded by Portnoy in 2003 and has evolved to produce content and provide odds through a sportsbook after investments by the Chemin Group and Penn National, which own a majority of the stake in the company. The company launched the mobile app Barstool Sportsbook in Pennsylvania in September of 2020. In a statement earlier this year, the company said “As you get into 2021, I think you should expect for us to be in every state that’s legal, where we operate and can launch by the end of 2021.”
