In a battle of AFC West heavyweights, the Los Angeles Chargers are set to take on the Kansas City Chiefs on Thursday Night Football in Week 2.

Chargers star wide receiver Keenan Allen (hamstring) has been ruled out for this matchup and it will be a tough task for the road underdogs to pick up a win on short rest.

Chiefs-Chargers Looking to Claim Early Sole Possession of AFC West
The two kingpins of the AFC West meet at Kansas City’s Arrowhead Stadium with the victor claiming sole possession of the division lead.
Although the Chiefs are 27-6 at home the past four years in the regular season, they are 1-3 against the Chargers. This includes LA’s 30-24 win in Week 3 last season (7.5-point underdog) as the Chargers benefited from a plus-4 edge in turnovers in that victory.
Last week, Kansas City had a league-best 33 first downs in a 44-21 win against the Arizona Cardinals, with Patrick Mahomes throwing for five TDs with no interceptions. QBs had six such 5/0 games in the league last year, and Mahomes had one of them in a 41-14 road win against the Las Vegas Raiders.
LA opened with a 24-19 home victory over Las Vegas as a 3.5-point choice and intercepted Derek Carr three times.
Although Kansas City won the West by three games over LA in 2021, had the host Chargers won and not blown a 28-21 lead in the final 1:16 and then tumbled in OT 34-28 in Week 15, they would have tied the Chiefs for the division lead and owned the head-to-head tiebreaker with three games left.

Chiefs vs. Chargers Prediction: Chiefs -4.5
Unlike last year when the Chiefs were breaking in an inexperienced offensive line and got off to a 3-4 start, they have one of the league’s best units this season, which only makes the job easier for Mahomes, who didn’t get dropped on 39 drop-backs last week.
But he better have his head on a swivel this week since LA had five sacks last week vs. Las Vegas, including three by Khalil Mack. One of which was a late fourth-down strip sack of Carr.
One injury note, though, is that ORG Trey Smith is questionable (ankle). He was a sixth-round pick last year out of Tennessee.
With regard to the Chargers, this is a particularly bad week for them to be without All-Pro corner J.C. Jackson, who is day-to-day after recent ankle surgery. But without him last week, LA still had those three INTs.
Also, veteran LA receiver Keenan Allen (hamstring) hobbled off the field against the Raiders last week after catching all four targeted throws from Justin Herbert, including one for 42 yards. He’s also unlikely to play.
One more thing that works against the Chargers: the league schedule makers gave them a mini atomic wedgy by having them travel east across two time zones on three days’ rest. No other team is scheduled to travel across even one time zone east on such short rest.
Prediction: Chiefs 31, Chargers 21
