Craig Carton, a longtime radio personality and FanDuel Responsible Gaming Ambassador, spoke about compulsive gambling, recovery and responsible play at the National Association of Broadcasters Show in New York. He appeared alongside FanDuel President Christian Genetski.
The session was titled “The Future of Sports Betting: Growth, Media & Responsibility.” CNN tech reporter Clare Duffy moderated.
Carton’s story and message
Carton said compulsive gambling cost him his career and his freedom. He served time in federal prison and later got a second chance in broadcasting.
He has been FanDuel’s Responsible Gaming Ambassador since 2021. He also hosts “The Comeback with Craig Carton,” a FanDuel web series about the dangers of the illegal gambling market and about removing the stigma around addiction.
Carton described the promise he made at one of the lowest points in his life. “I told myself that I would use my story and the platform I’d be given to try to help people avoid going down the same path as me,” he said.
He summed up his perspective this way: “I’ve experienced gambling from both sides.” He also said, “A problem gambler like me is bad for FanDuel’s business.”
FanDuel’s tools and the stigma around using them
Genetski said FanDuel frames sports betting as entertainment spend. “Sports betting belongs in the category of entertainment spend, and that’s how we frame it to customers,” he said.
FanDuel says customers can use several tools to manage their play:
- My Spend
- Deposit limits
- Wager limits
- Loss limits
- Time away from the platform
Genetski acknowledged that using such tools can carry a stigma. “There may be a stigma around using Responsible Gaming tools,” he said, in the context of efforts to normalize their use.
Regulated markets and industry standards
Carton contrasted regulated markets with other gambling environments. “People like me, who recognize they now have a problem, have more resources in a regulated market,” he said.
He also described a case in which a self-excluded gambler later received marketing to gamble in person. Carton said the example shows the need for safeguards across operators.
FanDuel and other regulated operators work through the Responsible Online Gaming Association (ROGA) on industry-wide standards and consumer protections.
