Attentive mixed martial arts bettors in New Jersey must have thought they had found the equivalent of Biff Tannen’s sports almanac on April 1, 2022. It didn’t end up as lucrative.
A communication breakdown between the Professional Fighter’s League and FanDuel Sportsbook at the Meadowlands led to oddsmakers crafting lines for a bout that had transpired on March 25. The mistake was eventually caught by an integrity-monitoring agency. The 34 very-informed bets placed on the card were voided and more than $231,094 was paid out to settle them.
FanDuel paid a $2,000 fine on Jan 2, 2024.
The incident became broad public knowledge this week when the New Jersey Department of Gaming Enforcement released documents relating to the cold case.
What Happened When FanDuel Took Bets on a Finished Card?
FanDuel claims that the PFF didn’t inform it that the April 1 Challengers stream on Fubo was a replay. The sportsbook, however, didn’t confer with the sanctioning body before making odds on the card. The International Betting Integrity Association eventually informed FanDuel of the situation and the sportsbook then voided the bets and refunded the wagers.
FanDuel, one of the top two sportsbooks by volume in the US, did not contest the fine.
DraftKings was recently levied a $100,000 fine by the DGE for improper reporting of tax.
