Orioles’ Camden Yards to Host SuperBook Sportsbook by MLB Opening Day 2023

The Baltimore Orioles and SuperBook Sports have agreed to a partnership that will result in a sportsbook at the famed Camden Yards beginning with the 2023 Major League Baseball season. The deal still requires approval from Maryland Lottery & Gaming Control Commission.

SuperBook Sports is based in Las Vegas and launched in 1986. It calls itself “The World’s Largest Sportsbook” and maintains a 30,000-square-foot retail sportsbook in Las Vegas at Westgate Las Vegas Resort, formerly the Las Vegas Hilton. That venue has 350 seats, several bars, and a giant 220-foot screen to show off sporting action from around the world.

The SuperBook retail sportsbook at Camden Yards will not be as expansive, but it will provide fans at Orioles home games an opportunity to wager on baseball and other sports.

SuperBook also plans on offering a mobile sports betting app in Maryland.

Maryland legalized sports betting in 2021, permitting wagering at retail operations within the state’s six casinos, or at any of the professional sports stadiums, which include Camden Yards, Capital One Arena (home to the Wizards and Capitals), M&T Bank Stadium, which hosts the Ravens, and the Commanders’ FedEx Field, which is also expected to get a sportsbook.

“The heritage and tradition of the Orioles brand fits perfectly with the SuperBook brand,” SuperBook Sports vice president of marketing Kristin Mackey said in a press release Wednesday. “To be a part of ‘The Ballpark That Forever Changed Baseball’ is an honor, and we look forward to bringing a one of a kind sports lounge experience to fans. The future of the Orioles is bright, and we look forward to continuing to grow together for years to come.”

Camden Yards debuted in 1992, replacing historic Memorial Stadium, the site of several World Series. Dubbed “Oriole Park at Camden Yards,” it was the first MLB park designed by HOK Sport (now known as Populous). Several vintage-style touches were added to Camden, including the iconic warehouse building looming over the right field stands. Camden, which seats just over 48,000, has consistently been rated one of the most beautiful and popular sporting venues in the United States.

The Orioles have not enjoyed the same success in Camden that the franchise did in the decades before the move to the new ballpark. From 1966 to 1983, Baltimore won three World Series (one in each decade), six pennants, and seven division titles, and topped 90 wins in 15 of 18 seasons.

This year behind a slew of young players, the Orioles are challenging for a playoff spot, which would be their first since 2016. Still, despite recent mediocrity, the Orioles are a popular franchise in Maryland.

In addition to Nevada, SuperBook Sports operates in Colorado, New Jersey, Arizona, and Tennessee. The sports betting brand also has plans to launch in Iowa, Ohio, and Indiana.

“SuperBook Sports is excited about this partnership with the Baltimore Orioles,”  Mackey added.

Renovations Pending for Camden Yards

Earlier in 2022, the Maryland General Assembly passed a bill, signed into law by Governor Larry Hogan, that supplies up to $1.2 billion to renovate Camden Yards and the property surrounding it, as well as M&T Bank Stadium. The state wants to update the venues, as well as add amenities and improve accessibility and access to retail locations in and around the sporting facilities.

When Can I Bet on Sports at Camden Yards?

On Aug. 17, the Orioles and SuperBook Sports announced that a retail sportsbook at Oriole Park at Camden Yards will debut in time for Opening Day of the 2023 baseball season.

Maryland launched retail sports betting in 2022, but thus far fewer than a dozen locations are operating in the state. Horseshoe Baltimore Casino, Live! Casino & Hotel Maryland, and MGM National Harbor are among them.

The state has authorized an additional 30 retail betting licenses, some of which will be assigned to the Baltimore professional sports teams, such as the Orioles or Ravens.

Maryland can grant up to 60 licenses for online sportsbooks, but mobile sports betting is not expected to launch until 2023, with Super Bowl 57 the most recent target date.
