The U.S. Commodity Futures Trading Commission has granted Sporttrade registration as both a Designated Contract Market (DCM) and a Derivatives Clearing Organization (DCO), the company announced.
Sporttrade says the approvals let it launch sports event prediction markets with a broker-first market structure. The company says it aims to deliver tight spreads and real-time execution under CFTC oversight.
“Receiving our DCM and DCO registrations from the CFTC is a true full circle moment for our company,” said CEO Alex Kane.
What the DCM and DCO status allows
Sporttrade says the designations let it support intermediated activity through Futures Commission Merchants (FCMs). It can also serve direct access participants, Introducing Brokers (IBs) and Independent Software Vendors (ISVs).
The company says it can clear for other DCMs through its DCO as well.
Kane said the company was founded on the idea that sports markets deserve the same structure, pricing and regulatory integrity as traditional financial markets. “By operating as both the exchange and the clearing venue, we are empowering broker partners with superior market quality while giving sophisticated traders the liquidity, transparency, and service they demand,” he said.
Broker onboarding and rollout
Sporttrade is onboarding brokers with national distribution, such as Fliff, pending regulatory approval. The company says it is working with a pipeline of additional brokers and institutional partners to expand its market presence in the coming months.
The exchange and clearing capabilities will roll out in phases, starting with select flow and liquidity providers.
Kane also said Sporttrade has begun clearing discussions with several exchanges. “In addition to our exchange business, we’re pleased to have begun clearing discussions with several exchanges who have understood Sporttrade to be a market leader on exchange and clearing technology for the past five years,” he said.
