Usman vs. Edwards 2 Headlines UFC 278 Betting Card

Reigning champion Usman – priced at sportsbooks between -375 and -335 on the moneyline – opens as a large favorite against Edwards – priced between +260 and +280 – in the sequel.

The UFC matchmakers have also set up a bantamweight date between third-ranked Jose Aldo and sixth-ranked Merab Dvalishvili. Both fighters have recently made tremendous strides in the division, and the winner may be next in line to challenge for the 135-pound belt.

Oddsmakers set this bout as a virtual pick’em, with neither fighter priced shorter than -120 odds or longer than +102. In other words, this contest is as unpredictable as it can get.

Usman Looks for Sixth Title Defense

If you tried to find just one blemish on Kamaru Usman’s UFC resume, you would fail miserably. A former NCAA wrestling champ, Usman (20-1 MMA; 15-0 UFC) quickly joined the UFC roster after winning six of his first seven fights to start his MMA career – his only career loss coming in his second fight as a pro.

The Nigerian Nightmare has defended his welterweight title five times since he soundly defeated Tyron Woodley as an underdog at UFC 235 to become the champion. His successful title defenses include wins over superstars Colby Covington (twice), Jorge Masvidal (twice), and Gilbert Burns.

The 35-year-old’s perfect 15-0 UFC record has put him neck and neck with Hall of Famer Georges St-Pierre as the greatest UFC welterweight fighter of all time. If topping GSP in the 170-pound GOAT discussion is a part of Usman’s future plans, then a sixth successful title defense, particularly over a star like Edwards, would be a great place to start.

Edwards Eyes First UFC Gold After 14-Month Hiatus

British sensation Leon Edwards (19-3 MMA; 11-2, 1 NC UFC) is an accomplished fighter who’s demonstrated he can contend with fellow top-flight welterweights.

Rocky went 8-1 and was a BAMMA welterweight champion before getting promoted to the UFC, where he initially looked much less dominant. He lost two of his first four fights, including one against Usman in 2015. Usman must’ve rocked Edwards so hard that the latter learned how to win again, because the Englishman wound up going undefeated in his next 10 fights, including against the likes of Vicente Luque, Donald Cerrone, Rafael dos Anjos, and most recently, Nate Diaz.

Edwards has made it past almost every level of the welterweight division, moving up from fighting low-end talents in Fight Night prelims to fighting some of the best in the division in UFC PPV headliners. The only level left standing between him and UFC gold is the boss level featuring the number one-ranked fighter in the world in Usman.

The 30-year-old had been yearning for a title shot for quite some time. His prayers have finally been answered after waiting 14 months since his last fight, and he now has a golden opportunity to not just become a UFC champion, but to become the first-ever Jamaica-native UFC champion.

Usman, Edwards Odds History

Champions should never see title bouts as a piece of cake, regardless of the opponent. However, oddsmakers see this as The Nigerian Nightmare’s easiest challenge – odds-wise – of all his title defenses.

Usman’s average closing odds over his five successful title defenses was -276 (per BestFightOdds), so as a favorite priced between -375 and -335, he should beat Edwards again with relative ease.

Edwards has had oddsmakers’ respect as of late. He’s been the favorite in all of his last seven bouts, including most recently against Diaz as a -475 chalk bet. Rocky has gone 2-1 in the UFC as the betting underdog. His sole loss came against Usman the first time, and he now faces the longest odds of his career – again versus the Nigerian.
