PointsBet Canada has agreed to a two-day suspension of its Ontario gaming site in a settlement with the Alcohol and Gaming Commission of Ontario.
This is the first time the regulator ever proposed a suspension. PointsBet told the ACGO that it did not offer any bets that would have been swayed by former NBA player Jontay Porter, who pleaded guilty to conspriacy to commit wire fraud after he took himself out of games and told people to bet the unders on his performance.
PointsBet eventually admitted a year and a half later that it did take bets concerning Porter that should have been reported. The AGCO originally called for a five-day ban.
The agreement also requires an independent audit and independently validated remediation of any findings.
AGCO Must Approve Auditor and Audit Methodology
PointsBet agreed to undertake an independent audit using both an auditor and an audit methodology approved by the AGCO. The operator also committed to addressing any findings, with that remediation subject to independent validation.
“Regulated igaming operators act as a critical first line of defense in protecting the integrity of sport and Ontario’s sports betting market,” the regulator said in February. “They are required to diligently monitor, detect and immediately report unusual and suspicious betting activity on their sites that may be indicative of bet-rigging.
“The timely identification and reporting of such issues warn sports leagues, integrity monitors, regulators and law enforcement of potential integrity concerns. It also alerts gaming operators across the globe, which allows them to take necessary steps to protect their patrons from bets lacking integrity.”
